Happy Fall!

The rains are back, the mornings are dark and  misty. It's Fall.
We celebrated the change of seasons by learning about the Earth and how it travels around the sun.
With our tables as the sun, we practiced revolving by walking around and carefully not bumping into other planets.
Then we learned about rotation and we added it to our movement around the sun.

Our value of the month is Perseverance. The children certainly showed that when they took on their beginning of the year diagnostic. It can be tiring and frustrating as the program gets to know each child. I was so proud and thankful that we were able to do it in one day thanks to help from Mrs. Waltrip and Mr. Witsoe.

We are getting ready for reading rotations! This week we focused on writers workshop and word work. During word work, children will engage in various activities that will help them practice Sight Words and High Frequency Words.

Stamping
Phonics practice pages

Rhyming puzzles

 White Boards
Magnetic Letters

We could use extra hands as we get used to logging in to our computers as one of our centers.
 10:30-11:40 MTWF.  Also 1:00-1:45 M-F

In math we have been learning about and practicing sorting and patterning. K has been looking for more than one attribute while 1st grade has been creating and continuing patterns.

One of our specialists is Mrs Gonzales. She teaches Music and Movement and the children love going to her classes. Here they are singing the Snail Song while creating a spiral shape.

We had 2 very special visitors this week. 1st we met Our OT specialists service dog Ora. She is a beautiful golden retriever who demonstrated staying calm and quiet in the hallways!

Then our school resource officer, Officer Hamrich, came by to teach us why we do practices to stay safe. The class did their first lock down drill, and with a little help from the "tortoise" (slow and steady) we had an excellent and stress free practice.

We end every day with some time for exploration and discovery.

Welcome Kinder-friends!

This week we welcomed out new Kinder-friends. How brave they all were at Cherrydale time! You parents were brave too!  I love the affirmation of hearing children's voices saying the pledge.

When we got to class, our First grade buddies helped us learn our morning routines for attendance and taking care of backpacks and important papers.

We relaxed with some drawing and play-dough while we chatted with new friends.

We learned 2 important reading strategies this week. Rhyming Robot helps us remember that a rhyme sounds the same at the end of the word. Lips the Fish reminds us to get our lips ready to make the first sound in the word we are reading.
We learned the word syllable and clapped out the beats in our names. We transferred our learning to math after learning that a graph was a picture that can tell us information with one look. We made a graph to find out which was the more popular syllable count for our class.

And the winner is - TWO!

The children learned that another name for a rhyme is a word-family. The children enjoyed making an apple word-family slider while practicing their scissor and glue stick skills.

We have started small group work. These groups will change as we grow and learn.

It's always nice to relax at the end of the day with some free choice activities.

 Or just relax....

We are just getting started and are looking forward to a great year!
