Happy 2017 !

Retrospective is the word of the day so it seems an appropriate time to take a look back on our last few weeks before our winter break.

We have been working on understanding that we are responsible for our learning and during our choice times, we need to make good decisions. Our new goal is to vary our choices to include word work

Reading with a partner or on our own

  or Writing

We also offer the option of doing work on IReady, the District's online assessment program which has targeted lessons for every child.

One group meets with me.
Sessions last between 15 and 20 minutes

Our class participated in an Hour of Code...a special day set aside to encourage children to begin learning this skill. These are the jobs of the future. I have heard that learning to code is like learning a new language.

Our class has been doing a special investigation of the seasons and why they occur.
Mr Kirby provided us with balls so we could observe the diminished intensity of light on a curved surface. This creates the cooler temperatures at the top and bottom of our planet. We also got a real good look at Day and Night.

We made models of the earth and the sun so we could demonstrate the path the earth takes and also the difference between rotating and revolving.

Mother Nature cooperated with our studies and gave us a taste of snow on the day before the last day of school. We sneaked outside to enjoy it ...along with our other sneaky second grade friends.

Our last day of school was a workshop day. The children had several arts and crafts projects to engage in. Thank you again to Mrs. Barry, Mr. and Mrs. Saenz, and Mrs. Weaver for their help keeping the ball rolling.
One of my favorites is to see what children will create with a few simple shapes, some construction paper and their imaginations.  Here are some take aways from our cards table:

We took a break after PE to start our shadow tracking data collection. Once a month (Sun willing) with the help of a partner, we will measure our shadows and compare the differences. Are they getting longer or shorter and what is happening with the Sun to make it so?

Back in class we put our finishing touches on our projects. Branch pendant painting

Candle/pencil holder ...

and T-shirt design:

They all seemed to have a great time letting the other side of their brain work for a day.
And now it's time for school again.
We will meet again Tuesday Morning. We will welcome a new friend, Ethan Henry this week too!
Happy Birthday to Jayden who has a January 1st birthday!

See you Tuesday!
